Eating less can be as simple as not putting the serving dishes on the table.  Have you ever tried this?  If the food is conveniently in front of you, you might help yourself to more and more food.  But what if it’s across the room?!  If you are serious about making a healthy impact in your life and your waistline, try it!

A new study from Cornell University called “Serve Here: Eat There” looked at the eating habits of 78 adults. Brian Wansink, the director of the Cornell Food & Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think said “We looked at whether serving foods from the kitchen counter, instead of at the table, would reduce the number of times a person refilled his or her plate”.  The research showed that when they kept the serving dishes out of sight and not on the table, women eat 20% fewer calories and men eat 29% fewer calories.

The researchers also pointed out that this strategy can work to increase the number of healthy foods your family can eat like vegetables and fruits by keeping them out in the open and easily accessible.

A simple change to your accessibility to foods could change your waistline and help you eat less.  The less calories you consume will lead to less weight.

Today, make the commitment to make these changes:

  • Put fruits on the counter,
  • Wash up fruits or veggies and put them in containers in the refrigerator so that they are ready to eat.  Grapes, strawberries, carrots, etc.
  • Serve food from the stove, not the table.
  • Only condiments go on the table – or put on salad dressing and butter  from the counter too!
